Background of the Study
Network monitoring is an essential aspect of maintaining the security, reliability, and performance of modern network infrastructures. Federal University, Dutsin-Ma, Katsina State, like many academic institutions, has a growing demand for real-time insights into its network’s performance to ensure the smooth operation of its academic and administrative functions. A network monitoring tool enables administrators to track network traffic, detect anomalies, and respond to issues proactively (Abdulkareem et al., 2023).
The growing complexity of networks, including a wide range of devices and applications, has made it crucial for institutions like Federal University, Dutsin-Ma to implement robust monitoring tools. Such tools help in tracking bandwidth usage, identifying potential security breaches, and ensuring the optimal performance of networking systems (Zaki et al., 2024). Network performance issues, such as slow speeds, network congestion, and outages, can significantly disrupt the functioning of the university. Therefore, developing a network monitoring tool tailored to the university's unique needs can provide the necessary visibility and improve the overall management of the network infrastructure (Sule & Ahmed, 2024).
This study aims to design and implement a network monitoring tool for Federal University, Dutsin-Ma, that will assist in tracking network performance, managing resources, and ensuring network security.

Statement of the Problem
Federal University, Dutsin-Ma, does not have an effective network monitoring system in place, leading to challenges in managing network resources and identifying performance issues. The lack of real-time monitoring makes it difficult for network administrators to detect congestion, security breaches, or network malfunctions, resulting in downtime and inefficiencies. The absence of a tailored network monitoring solution hampers the university's ability to respond quickly to issues and optimize network resources.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To design and implement a network monitoring tool for Federal University, Dutsin-Ma, that will track network traffic and performance.

  2. To assess the effectiveness of the network monitoring tool in detecting network anomalies and improving the response time to network issues.

  3. To propose strategies for enhancing the monitoring tool's capabilities based on the performance evaluation.

Research Questions

  1. How can a network monitoring tool be designed to track and manage network performance at Federal University, Dutsin-Ma?

  2. What impact does the implementation of a network monitoring tool have on the university’s ability to detect and resolve network issues?

  3. What improvements can be made to the network monitoring tool to further enhance its functionality and effectiveness?

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on the design, implementation, and evaluation of a network monitoring tool for Federal University, Dutsin-Ma, Katsina State. The study will assess the tool's performance in tracking network traffic and detecting issues. The limitations of this study may include the availability of data regarding the current network setup, possible disruptions during tool implementation, and the time required to measure long-term effectiveness.

Definitions of Terms

  • Network Monitoring Tool: A software solution used to track and manage the performance and health of a network in real-time.

  • Bandwidth Usage: The amount of data transferred across a network during a specific period.

  • Anomaly Detection: The identification of unusual or abnormal network behaviors that may indicate a problem or security threat.

  • Network Congestion: A state where the network's capacity is exceeded, leading to slow data transfer and delays.
